A man who shot indiscriminately at passing vehicles on a Tennessee highway Thursday and then targeted police officers said he opened fire in response to recent killings of black men by police, according to local authorities.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said in a news release that the black suspect, Lakeem Keon Scott, was "troubled" by the shootings across the U.S, the Associated Press reported Friday.

Scott killed a 44-year-old woman and wounded three others, including a police officer, after he shot at a motel and then turned his fire to passing cars. He then fired at three officers who were on the scene.

All of his targets were white, according to authorities.

Scott is being treated in the hospital after officers shot him.
