President Obama plans to leave roughly 8,400 troops in Afghanistan through the end of his term as the Taliban resurges in the country.
The adjustment will reduce forces by about 1,400 troops.
"The security situation in Afghanistan remains precarious," Obama said Wednesday. "Even as they improve, Afghan security forces are not as strong as they need to be."
Obama had initially planned to drop troop levels from 9,800 to 5,500 by the end of the year, but continued insurgency threats and reliance of local forces on U.S. assistance forced the president to slow America’s troop drawdown.
