MSNBC Host Wrongly Calls Chewbacca a 'Big Furry Monkey'

December 17, 2015

On the morning of the one of the biggest movie releases in history, MSNBC host José Díaz-Balart tried to show off his Star Wars literacy by calling the beloved character Chewbacca a "big furry monkey."

Chewbacca is, in fact, a Wookiee. Wookiees are tall, hairy humanoids that were native to the planet Kashyyyk. Monkeys are mammals that are mostly tree-dwelling and come from planet Earth.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens already has more than $100 million in advance ticket sales.

"Yes, people are dressed as that big furry monkey, Chewbacca, and all of the other characters are in line too," Díaz-Balart said.

Early in a previous segment, Díaz-Balart called Chewbacca a "space monkey."

Chewbacca is known to be the co-pilot of Han Solo and helped play a vital role in the Galactic Civil War by aiding the Rebel Alliance in fighting against the Empire. Prior to the Galactic Civil War, Kashyyyk was blockaded by the Empire and forced the planet's inhabitants into slavery, which helped build the Death Star.
