Sen. Tom Cotton (R., Ark.) said Sunday that the United States has to assume that Iran will cheat on the nuclear agreement.
In an interview with Chuck Todd on NBC’s Meet the Press, Cotton explained that the inspection and access provisions in the deal are not strict enough and that Iran will cheat to achieve its goal of a nuclear weapon.
"Unfortunately, Chuck, as I said, even if Iran obeys the deal, Iran will be a nuclear weapons state in ten years," Cotton said. "We have to assume they'll cheat on the deal. And the inspection and verification and enforcement mechanisms, I believe, are too weak to do so."
Cotton said that at the end of the agreement, it is unlikely that Iran will have changed their terror behavior.
"Iran is a terror-sponsoring, anti-American outlaw regime," Cotton said. "If you think Iran is going to change their behavior in a decade, I can tell you how unlikely that is. They were trying to kill me and my soldiers. We were lucky. Hundreds of American troops were not."
