Axelrod On DSCC Dropping Grimes: 'I'm Not Surprised'

October 14, 2014

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee announced Tuesday it will pull its resources from Kentucky’s Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, Alison Lundergan Grimes.

Democratic consultant David Axelrod told MSNBC the move was not surprising, as Grimes has not "performed particularly well in the last few weeks."

Grimes trails incumbent Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell, who also serves as Senate majority leader.

"We’re at that stage of the campaign when the committees have to make decisions about how to allocate their resources in the final weeks--their finite resources--there are so many difficult races that are winnable for Democrats," Axelrod said.

Grimes pled the fifth on Monday when asked if she voted for President Obama in 2012. Obama lost Kentucky by 23 points in the 2012 presidential election.

It "doesn’t seem like an effective strategy" for the candidate to avoid her own voting record, Axelrod said.

McConnell is leading by three points.
