Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg sharply criticized liberal students, professors and administrators across the country for their pattern of silencing the voices of those they disagreed with during his Harvard commencement address Thursday.
He accused them of "censorship" and a modern-day form of McCarthyism. Angry liberals worked to stop such speakers as former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, women's rights activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali and IMF chief Christine LaGarde from speaking at various commencement ceremonies.
"Today, on many college campuses, it is liberals trying to repress conservative ideas, even as conservative faculty members are at risk of becoming an endangered species," he said.
Bloomberg pointed out 96 percent of Harvard faculty and employees donated to Obama's re-election campaign. A fairly lame attempt, using the hashtag #HarvardAgainstBloomberg, started by a Harvard Law School student to stop Bloomberg himself from speaking "failed to gain much traction" 24 hours before the address, according to CNN.
"This spring, it has been disturbing to see a number of college commencement speakers withdraw — or have their invitations rescinded — after protests from students and — to me, shockingly — from senior faculty and administrators who should know better," Bloomberg added, according to Independent Journal Review.
