Kentucky High Schools Ban Postgame Handshakes

Thanks, Obama

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association issued a "Commissioner’s Directive," instructing schools not to hold "organized post-game handshake lines" citing too many tussles, according to WAVE-LOU.

The KHSAA writes, "While it is an obvious sign of sportsmanship and civility, many incidents have occurred ... where fights and physical conflicts have broken out. Unfortunately, the adrenaline and effort required to participate in the sport sometimes seems to deplete the supply of judgment available to participants."

More than two dozen fights have erupted during the post-handshake exercise in Kentucky, according to KHSAA.

The athletic association reasons that there are no rules requiring the post-game handshake and often times there is a lack of supervision, thus the increase in fights. The KHSAA has decided to allow athletes to shake hands voluntarily, but cautions, "You’re on notice, if you’re going to do this, you’re going to be accountable."
