Green Economy Sputtering

California sheds green jobs for first time in 15 years

February 8, 2012

Employment shrank by three percent in California’s vaunted "green economy" between January 2009 and January 2010, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

The Chronicle reports:

The green economy that California officials hoped would add jobs during the depths of the recent recession actually lost positions instead, according to a new report. …

Many of those companies struggled during 2009, even as California officials and the newly inaugurated Obama administration touted green tech as key to the nation's recovery. At the start of 2009, California had about 174,800 jobs in the core green economy. By January 2010, that number had fallen to 169,754, the first drop ever in the 15 years of employment data analyzed by Next 10 and the Collaborative Economics consulting firm.
