Rep. Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) called the IRS' targeting of conservative groups an example of Big Government arrogance while discussing the Congressional investigation into the agency Wednesday on CNBC's Squawk Box.

"We're going to do our job on the IRS," Ryan said. "We're going to do our job on doing our oversight, and what we've already learned is just chilling. It is really amazing. I see it as the arrogance of big government."

Ryan added the scandal went beyond the Cincinnati office where the inappropriate scrutiny originated, backed up by a report with letters bearing the signatures of agency higher-ups wanting information on conservative groups. He also agreed with a Wall Street Journal editorial cited by host Joe Kernen, which urged Republicans to not seek a special prosecutor but instead continue to investigate the matter through Congressional hearings.

"Then Eric Holder appoints somebody and they come back in two years after spending $20 million with some kind of conclusion," Ryan said. "We think we should do our jobs in Congress."
