Rev. Al Sharpton, while continuing to defend his involvement in the Tawana Brawley hoax Tuesday, misleadingly told Morning Joe panelists he "wasn't involved" in the 2006 Duke lacrosse rape case, which was also discredited.
As he was being questioned by co-host Willie Geist on Brawley, Sharpton brought up Duke.
"You've got people right now, Willie, that says, he shouldn't have gotten involved in Duke Lacrosse," Sharpton said. "I didn't get involved in that. Not one time. Never went to North Carolina."
Though he did not go to Durham, to say he was not involved was untrue, as he spoke out on national television about the case.
"I think that there are certainly a lot of racial factors. Whether it is directly in the case, we'll see, because some reports said that there was racial language used," he told Bill O'Reilly in a 2006 interview on Fox News.
He went on to say the public was "trying the victim," but her claims of rape were found to be false.
Even liberal co-host of The View Whoopi Goldberg called out Sharpton in 2007 for jumping too swiftly to conclusions about the case.
"And I know, Al, that you were down there and you were really trying to look out for the folks that thought were being really be run over, but as it turns out it wasn’t true," she said. "And, and I want you to apologize to them because those kids went through Hell and I think we owe it to them."
