The road to the Senate goes through Iowa and it’s looking good for Republicans.

"The Hawkeye State is being viewed increasingly as a national bellwether in the battle for the Senate" Burgess Everett of Politico wrote in his Saturday column.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) shared that sentiment saying, "Joni Ernst would mean—coming to the United States Senate—that Mitch McConnell would be leader of the United States Senate, who agrees with her on everything. Think of what would mean for our country."

Shortly after Reid’s comments the Des Moines Register released their final poll of the Iowa senate race. It showed Republican Joni Ernst surging to a 7-point lead over Democrat Rep. Bruce Braley.

Jennifer Jacobs of the DMR noted this recent poll's significance in that Ernst's lead falls outside of the margin of error, indicating a likely win for Ernst.

There are other telling signs that Braley is falling behind.

"[Braley] is not leading in any congressional district including his own in northeast Iowa, the one he currently represents as a congressman," Jacobs said.
