Former President George W. Bush predicted a bleak future for the Republican Party during an April gathering in Dallas, Texas, telling a small group of former aides and advisers that he was worried he could be the GOP’s last president.

Bush, the nation’s 43rd president, expressed his concern after the 2016 primary election had been all but whittled down to Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Donald Trump.

"I’m worried that I will be the last Republican president," Bush told an intimate group of aides and advisers during an administration alumni event, Politico reported.

Bush, as well as his father, former President George H.W. Bush, and his brother, former Florida Gov. and 2016 candidate Jeb Bush, are not attending the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. The absence marks the first time in 40 years that no one from the Bush family will be present.

Former presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Arizona Sen. John McCain are also skipping the event.
