Penny Pritzker Rumored for Commerce Job

Hyatt heiress raised more than $900,000 for Obama's two campaigns

January 29, 2013

The Chicago Sun-Times' Michael Sneed reports she "hears" hotel heiress and major Democratic fundraiser Penny Pritzker is being considered for secretary of commerce.

The chair of President Obama's 2008 finance team, Pritzker raised between $200,000 and $500,000 for Obama's reelection campaign. As of May 2012, Pritzker had raised more than $900,000 for Obama since 2007, according to the New York Times.

Despite her less public role in the 2012 campaign, the Hyatt family member was seen in the president's company aboard Air Force One during a fundraising trip in July, only hours after the announcement of a global boycott against Hyatt Hotels by the largest national hospitality workers union.

A Chicago public schools board member, Pritzker was also the target of a September protest by striking teachers, thousands of whom protested outside a Chicago Hyatt.

This is not the first time Pritzker's name has come up for commerce secretary; she was seen as a candidate for the role in 2008. When asked by Reuters about the position in November, Pritzker declined to say whether she would be interested in it now.

"I feel as though I have played a role in the first administration," she said, "and I will always be available to help the second administration."
