Egyptian investigators said Tuesday that pilots aboard the EgyptAir flight that crashed in the Mediterranean Sea in May attempted to extinguish a fire aboard the plane, Voice of America News reported Tuesday.
Officials disclosed the development after analyzing a recovered cockpit voice recorder.
The Egyptian investigators said the recording is consistent with earlier examinations of the plane’s wreckage that showed fire and smoke on board. Authorities have not yet ruled out terrorism.
The EgyptAir Flight 804 from Paris to Cairo vanished from radar May 19 before plunging into the Mediterranean Sea. Fifty-six passengers and 10 crew members were aboard the flight.
The cockpit voice recorder captures sound from the plane’s flight deck, including conversations between the pilots and crew members, to assist authorities during investigations.
