Chelsea Manning, who is serving a 35-year prison sentence for violating the Espionage Act, was hospitalized Tuesday after attempting to hang herself, according to media reports.

Manning, 28, was taken to a nearby hospital after trying to commit suicide at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, CNN reported.

A U.S. Army spokesman confirmed to CNN that she has since been released, though officials "continue to monitor the inmate’s condition."

Manning, a transgender woman formerly known as Bradley, was charged in 2013 with leaking more than 700,000 classified documents, war logs, diplomatic cables, and video from the Iraqi and Afghan battlefield to WikiLeaks.

Manning’s attorneys filed an appeal against the sentence in May, calling the punishment "the most unjust sentence in the history of the military justice system."

The former solider wrote an opinion piece Friday for the Guardian on the Pentagon’s recent announcement that transgender people can openly serve in the military.
