As the Colorado House of Representatives debated the issuance of concealed carry permits to the state’s college students, one lawmaker had some creative ideas for self-defense alternatives to a firearm, as showcased in a new video from Revealing Politics.

Among Rep. Paul Rosenthal’s (D) proposed alternatives: "the buddy system."

Rosenthal also suggested that concerned students learn martial arts – "judo" is a viable self-defense alternative, he said--or carry pepper spray or a taser.

Rosenthal’s colleague, State Rep. Joe Salazar (D), was forced to apologize for comments he made during the same floor debate.

Another Democratic state representative said students could defend themselves with ballpoint pens.
