David Letterman is scheduled to headline a New York City fundraiser later this month for Democratic Rep. Tammy Duckworth, who is running for Senate in Illinois.
The former late night host long denied any Democratic leanings while hosting The Late Show on CBS, although critics noted that he tended to reserve his harshest insults for Republicans.
Alex Soros, son of left-wing philanthropist George Soros, is hosting the fundraiser at his home, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. The $1,000-per-plate event is slated for Oct. 25, and will also feature Democratic Sen. Al Franken.
Letterman, who retired from television earlier this year, rejected allegations of partisanship during an interview with Regis Philbin in 2012, saying his jokes were "not driven by anything other than who's easier to make fun of."
Although the Washington Post’s The Fix noted last May that Letterman’s only political donations were to a Democrat—Franken—the blog concluded that "very few, well, facts that suggest that Letterman is an out and out Democrat and/or pushing a hidden liberal agenda."
Meanwhile, prominent liberals failed to detect any political bias from Letterman.
"Nobody could read [Johnny Carson’s] politics, like we can't read Letterman's," said Chris Matthews in May. "I don't know what Letterman's politics are."
