Dempsey: Coalition Will 'Address Grievances That Caused This In The First Place'

September 16, 2014

Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the Obama administration's anti-ISIL coalition will encourage the Iraqi government to "address the grievances that caused this in the first place."

"The way forward seems to run clearly through a coalition of Arab and Muslim partners--and not through the ownership of the United States--in this issue," Dempsey said.

The "grievances" of ISIL, as Daily Beast reporter Eli Lake pointed out, include "the existence of infidels and non-believers in Muslim lands, or women's literacy."
