AP reporter Matt Lee grilled Jen Psaki over hacked Sony emails that say the State Department approved a scene of the upcoming the movie The Interview, in which North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un is assassinated.
"When did the State Department get into the business of telling movie studios what they can and cannot make as movies?" Lee asked.
Psaki dodged the question about a direct approval from the State Department, saying that they do not "sign off" on any movies.
She mentioned that State representatives routinely meet entertainment executives for informal meetings to discuss their proposed content.
"Entertainers are free to make movies of their choosing and we are not involved in that," Psaki said.
Lee brought up The Innocence of Muslims, a film which the Obama administration labeled as the catalyst for the 2012 Benghazi attack.
"The State Department wanted to take it down, so there is a history of movie criticism, or film criticism, from this building," Lee said.
"I would not put them into the same category," Psaki responded, reiterating that the State Department does not weigh in on film content.
