Mass. Dept of Transportation: $54M, two years to replace tunnel lights

FOX BOSTON: The lights into the Big Dig tunnel must be replaced. The Boston Globe is reporting the Massachusetts Department of Transportation spent the last year studying the light fixtures in the tunnels and they have determined they will need to be replaced. This all stems from February 2011 incident where a light suddenly fell onto the northbound lane. No one was hurt and the lights were temporarily shored up with plastic ties. It is expected to cost about $54 million to replace the lights. The project is likely to cause frequent lane closures in the tunnels for up to two years.
