Bush: I Don't Want to Undermine Our President

Former president comfortable staying out of the limelight

Former President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush were interviewed by ABC's Diane Sawyer Wednesday in advance of the dedication of the George W. Bush Library and Museum in Dallas.

Among the topics was his notable decision to stay out of political discussions since he left the presidency, out of respect to the current office-holder, Barack Obama.

"I had all the fame I needed," Bush said. "I've decided to stay out of the limelight, because one, I'm comfortable with that decision, and two, I don't really want to undermine our president. Frankly, the only way for me to generate any news is to either criticize the president or criticize my party. I'm not interested in doing either."

Bush also discussed his life outside the White House, the purpose of the library to give a picture of life as president and how he made decisions, being a new grandfather and his latest endeavor: painting.

The approval rating of Bush now matches that of Obama, Washington Post / ABC News poll found, at 47 percent, way up from when he left office.
