Empire State of Unemployment

Only four states have recovered all their private-sector jobs lost during the recession, while former economic powerhouses like California and New York remain below pre-recession levels, according to a report issued Monday by On Numbers.

Business Journal reports:

Texas has posted the nation's largest gain in private-sector employment during the past four years, adding 139,800 jobs, while North Dakota has registered the biggest improvement in percentage terms, up 14.3 percent.

New York, on the other hand, is still 24,500 private-sector jobs below its January 2008 total, a decline of 0.3 percent. […]

Forty-six states are still in the hole. The worst in raw terms is California, which had 855,200 fewer private-sector jobs in January 2012 than in January 2008. Nevada is dead last on the percentage list, down 12.7 percent in four years.

Only four states—Texas, Louisiana, North Dakota, and Alaska—and the District of Columbia have recovered jobs lost during the recession and added new jobs on top of that.
