NYC comptroller campaign treasurer charged with fraud, obstruction of justice

The campaign treasurer for Democratic New York City Comptroller John Liu has been charged with fraud, the Associated Press reports:

Jia Hou, also known as Jenny Hou, was arrested Tuesday on charges she was part of a scheme that used straw donors to funnel large, illegal contributions to thecampaign.

She also was charged with obstructing the government’s investigation of fraud in connection with the campaign’s fundraising efforts. […]

Defense attorney Martin Adelman said Hou was an "idealistic young woman" who will be seen that way as she fights the charges.

According to the AP, Liu is considered a potential candidate to succeed Michael Bloomberg as New York City mayor.
