ABC Poll: Majority Say Obama Has Been Too Cautious in Responding to ISIL

September 9, 2014

President Obama has hit some dire numbers in new ABC News/Washington Post poll, which shows Americans have flipped on their opinions of how to handle the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

The poll shows seven out of 10 Americans favor airstrikes against ISIL. This comes a year after a similar poll found Americans opposed airstrikes in Syria, 64 percent to 30 percent.

ABC’s Jon Karl reported that 91 percent of Americans say that they see ISIL as posing a vital threat to U.S. interests.

Even more damning is that 56 percent of the country disapproves how the president has handled foreign policy.

"The single biggest factor in that is a majority say the president has been too cautious in responding to this threat," Karl said. "That's why he's giving the speech. He's not going to order air strikes on Syria yet. He is going to make the case that he has a strong approach, a strategy for taking on this group."
