Abbas: Palestinians Won't Recognize Israel as Jewish State

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said Tuesday that Palestinians would not recognize Israel as a Jewish state, Israel Hayom reports.

Recognition of Israel as a Jewish state is one of Israel’s conditions for peace.

Abbas also said he would like to see a future Palestinian state based on 1967 borders "with some adjustments." East Jerusalem would be the capital, and there would be some Palestinian control over borders and airspace.

Arab League member states expressed support for the Palestinians, releasing a statement condemning the pressure put on the Palestinians to recognize Israel as a Jewish state and stressing a "categorical rejection" of that demand.

Abbas accused Israel of sabotaging the peace talks, saying it is "piling conditions on top of conditions to frustrate the American efforts to create a framework for the continuation of negotiations."

"We do not need a new round of agreements that Israel will bury under conditions, reservations and interpretations," Abbas added.
