Trump: Cohen Only Became a 'Rat' After FBI Did Something 'Absolutely Unthinkable'

Donald Trump

President Donald Trump said on Sunday that his former personal attorney Michael Cohen only became a "rat" after the FBI did something "absolutely unthinkable."

"Remember, Michael Cohen only became a "Rat" after the FBI did something which was absolutely unthinkable & unheard of until the Witch Hunt was illegally started," Trump tweeted. "They BROKE INTO AN ATTORNEY’S OFFICE! Why didn’t they break into the DNC to get the Server, or Crooked’s office?"

Trump calling his former attorney a "rat" comes after Cohen went on ABC and said he was done lying and being loyal to the president.

"I'm done with the lying. I'm done being loyal to President Trump. My first loyalty belongs to my wife, my daughter, my son and this country," Cohen said.

Cohen was sentenced on Wednesday to three years in prison for two campaign-finance violations and one charge of lying to Congress. Cohen admitted to making illegal payments during the 2016 campaign to several women who claimed to have an affair with Trump. The payments were made in order to keep the women from talking to the press about the alleged affairs and possibly influencing the election, according to Cohen. Prosecutors allege the president's former personal lawyer Michael Cohen acted at the direction of Trump, referred to as Individual-1 in a court filing, when he made payments to several women during the campaign. In the past, Trump has denied any knowledge of the payments. Cohen, however, recorded a conversation between him and Trump in which they discussed a payment to McDougal. The parent company of the National Enquirer, American Media Inc., admitted to helping facilitate the payment.

In April of this year, the FBI raided Cohen's office for documents related to the payments. The FBI obtained a warrant for the raid after a referral from special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.
