Trump Goes After CNN 'Fake News' Story Connecting His Associate to Russia

President Donald Trump targeted CNN on Tuesday morning for a retracted story linking longtime associate Anthony Scaramucci to the Kremlin.

Three journalists resigned from their positions at CNN after the news network retracted the story. Trump expressed amazement at the retraction and resignations on Twitter and again accused CNN of publishing other "fake news."

The retracted story claimed that the Senate Intelligence Committee was investigating Scaramucci for ties to the Kremlin-connected Russia Direct Investment Fund. CNN removed the story from its website and put up an editor's note saying that the article failed to meet its standards.

"On June 22, 2017, CNN.com published a story connecting Anthony Scaramucci with investigations into the Russian Direct Investment Fund," the note reads. "That story did not meet CNN's editorial standards and has been retracted."

Scaramucci had criticized the story Thursday, saying that CNN likes "hitting" Trump's friends. CNN apologized specifically to Scaramucci, and he accepted and said he was "moving on."

Trump also retweeted various stories critical of how Democrats have handled the Russia investigation. One was from Fox News detailing Sean Hannity's contention that the Russian hacking allegations are now bouncing back to hurt Democrats.
