Steyer on Why Trump Should Be Impeached: He's 'Violated His Trust' by Firing Comey

Democratic megadonor Tom Steyer on Sunday seemed unsure what crimes, legally worthy of impeachment, President Donald Trump has committed.

"The Constitution sets the ground for impeachment as treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors," CNN's Dana Bash asked Steyer. "Which has the president violated?"

"I would say it's clear that he has violated the Constitution in the sense that he has violated his trust with the American people through obstructing justice by firing the head of the FBI, Mr. Comey, for what he said explicitly was over the Russia investigation," Steyer said.

The California-based billionaire also claimed Trump has been taking payments from foreign governments "in contradiction of the Emoluments Clause."

He then claimed that a reason just as important as whether Trump meets the standard to be impeached, is the fact that the president just needs to be out of office.

"I don't think there's any question that he has, in fact, met the standard for impeachment, but I think the important thing is not just that he's met the standard, but it's very important and urgent that we get him out of office," Steyer said.

Bash reminded Steyer that special counsel Robert Mueller and congressional committees are in the middle of their own investigations into Trump and associates for potential ties to Russian officials.

"Aren't you playing into the president's message by calling for impeachment even before these investigations are complete?" she asked.

"As I said, an impeachment is actually a process where the House puts him up for trial in the Senate." Steyer said. "So, in fact, to have him impeached merely means that, in a public way, the Senate goes through all of the evidence right in front of the American people."

"There will be inevitably–we're in favor of the Mueller investigation, god bless him for what he's doing, but the fact of the matter is, the president has performed in a lawless way throughout the campaign and throughout his presidency. And he is an urgent threat to the American people," Steyer added.

Steyer finished his argument by claiming the American people "want this man impeached."

"So to sit here and wait doing absolutely nothing is the wrong thing to do. The American people want this man impeached," he said.

When told some Democrats think Steyer's impeachment campaign is a vanity project, Steyer said "It doesn't surprise me that political elites want to close off the American people and make sure they remain in control."
