Sharpton Says Rahm Emanuel Should Resign

MSNBC host Al Sharpton said Monday he felt embattled Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel should resign from office over his lack of leadership in the wake of another controversial police shooting.

The Chicago Police Department, already under federal investigation for allegations of racial disparity regarding use of force, is under fresh scrutiny after an officer accidentally killed a 55-year-old black woman late Saturday.

The black youth who prompted the initial call to the police was also killed in the gunfire.

Emanuel, the former Chief of Staff for President Obama, is currently on vacation in Cuba, and he has also been sharply criticized for allegations that he buried a video last year showing the police shooting of a black youth to save his re-election bid.

Sharpton remarked he couldn't believe Emanuel could still be on vacation with the sort of unrest happening with his city's police department.

"I don't see how he can continue governing now," Sharpton said in reply to Morning Joe fill-in host John Heilemann's question about whether Emanuel had the legitimacy to remain in office.

Heilemann asked Sharpton whether Emanuel should step down.

"I think that the people have to make that decision, but certainly from where I sit, he should, because I think that they have clearly said how do we trust this kind of administration ... you're not even showing up and dealing with it," Sharpton said.
