Nicolle Wallace Says She Voted for Clinton, Berates Democrats Who Didn't for Using 'Woman' Excuse

MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace said Tuesday she voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and berated Democrats who made excuses for voting against her, saying they used the "that woman" excuse.

Wallace, who served as communications director for President George W. Bush, said the statement she heard over and over when interviewing Democrats that voted for Donald Trump was, "It wasn't that we weren't ready for a woman. We weren't ready for that woman."

"Well, that woman was the only one on the menu, and I voted for her because I thought, 'What's a woman going to do? Make it worse?'" Wallace said. "I mean, our politics are so fractured. They're so broken. But there are still a lot of people who use the 'that woman' excuse for not voting for her. Not just Republicans, but Democrats."

She hit "dead-enders" who held onto the "Bernie dream," referring to her left-wing primary Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.), well after he was mathematically eliminated from getting the Democratic nomination.

In her election memoir What Happened, Clinton writes about what she calls sexism and misogyny that affected her campaign's success.

Wallace served on the 2008 campaign for Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.) but famously did not vote for him over reservations about his running mate, Sarah Palin.

An NBC and MSNBC political analyst, she began hosting "Deadline: White House" this year and is a fierce critic of Trump. She said in June she "once proudly called myself a Republican," suggesting she had left the party.
