Missouri State Senator Who Called for Trump's Assassination Announces Run for State House

Missouri Democratic state Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal, who was entrenched in controversy last year, has announced her intention to run again for public office.

Chappelle-Nadal, who is serving her final year in the Senate because of term limits, discussed with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch her intentions to run for the State House of Representatives. The state lawmaker said among her concerns are education and job creation, as well as cleaning up radioactive waste in the St. Louis region.

"I am not done with my work," Chappelle-Nadal, who previously served three terms in the State House, said.

Chappelle-Nadal came under fire last August after she posted on Facebook her wish that President Donald Trump be assassinated. She was widely condemned for her comments but refused to resign. She was censured by the Senate and lost all of her committee assignments.

That same month, the Missouri Democrat also shared a Holocaust-themed tweet targeting Gov. Eric Greitens (R., Mo.).

Nevertheless, Chappelle-Nadal said she has more work to do.

"I want to deal with sexual harassment in the state Capitol," she said.  "I want to make sure our policies reflect compassion for the victims because it’s just unacceptable."

Chapelle-Nadal will first face a number of Democratic contenders in her quest to represent the 86th House District seat. She previously lost a bid on a U.S. House of Representatives seat in 2016.
