Former President Jimmy Carter discouraged Democrats from pursuing the impeachment of President Donald Trump during an interview Tuesday.
Saying he supported his fellow Democrats in the 2018 midterm elections, Carter downplayed his involvement in politics but did opine on the matter of impeachment. Fox Business host Neil Cavuto brought up Democrats’ discussions of impeaching Trump and asked Carter whether he was interested in such a strategy.
"Not me, I don't talk about impeachment," Carter answered. "I think that’s the wrong thing for Democrats to do."
Democrats on the left have called for impeaching Trump, perhaps most vocally Rep. Maxine Waters (Calif.). Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke (Texas), whose campaign to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz (R.) has received extensive media attention, also said he would vote to impeach Trump until he said it was "premature," while several House members have voted in vain to proceed with a vote on impeachment.
Carter said it is unclear what the result of the midterm elections will be.
"I think the outcomes of the 2018 midterm elections are just completely unknown now," Carter said.
"I'm not actively involved in politics anymore, as you know, but I’ll be helping the Democrats as best I can," he added. "I think that the American people will make the right choice."
Trump himself has dismissed the idea of bringing articles of impeachment against him. Last week he said, "I don't know how you can impeach somebody who's done a great job."
Carter was interviewed by video while present at the 35th annual Carter Work Project for Habitat for Humanity, which he started with his wife Rosalynn.
