Gillibrand: Trump Should 'Immediately Resign' Over Sexual Misconduct Allegations

Kirsten Gillibrand

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D., N.Y.) on Monday called for President Donald Trump to "immediately resign" over allegations of sexual misconduct levied against him.

Three of Trump's accusers, who had made their charges public before, re-emerged on Monday with an interview with NBC's Megyn Kelly and a news conference calling for Trump to be investigated.

Gillibrand joined Sens. Cory Booker (D., N.J.), Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) and Jeff Merkley (D., Ore.) in calling on Trump to step down during an interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour.

"Well, President Trump should resign," she said. "These allegations are credible. They are numerous. I've heard these women's testimony, and many of them are heartbreaking, and President Trump should resign his position."

Gillibrand called for congressional hearings on the issue if Trump did not resign on his own. Trump has denied all allegations of sexual misconduct made against him.

"I think he should immediately resign, and if he doesn't, we should have the investigation," she said.

Gillibrand. has made sexual assault one of her defining issues as a legislator. She was the first of a flurry of Democrats to call on Sen. Al Franken (D., Minn.) to step down after multiple past accusations of harassment emerged against him. Gillibrand initially hedged on whether Franken should resign but ultimately said he should.

Gillibrand said last month that President Bill Clinton should have resigned the presidency over his affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
