Democrats to Invite Sexual Misconduct Victims to Trump's State of the Union

Some House Democrats are planning on inviting victims of sexual assault to President Donald Trump's State of the Union address on Jan. 30.

According to an aide to Rep. Lois Frankel (D., Fla.), a prominent voice on sexual misconduct and leader of the House Democratic Women’s Working Group, the stunt aims to highlight the issue of sexual assault, NBC reported.

"Some party members will be bringing survivors of sexual assault and advocates as their guests," the aide said.

However, Democrats are cautious not to make the issue a partisan political war.

Earlier in the week House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) asked Frankel not to hold mock hearings with the women who accused Trump of sexual assault. Pelosi felt the hearing would distract from other victims across the country.

Members of the women’s working group are already planning on wearing black to the State of the Union to stand in solidarity with victims of sexual assault. Rep. Jackie Speier (D., Calif.) said she is encouraging women and men on both sides of the aisle to join in on the demonstration.

"This is a culture change that is sweeping the country, and Congress is embracing it," Speier, who is working on a bill to strengthen sexual misconduct prevention standards in the House, said.
