A panel of Democratic voters discussed the problems within their own party on MSNBC on Monday, admitting they fear the Democratic Party could continue to lose to Republicans in 2018.
As part of a series called "Dems Divided," MSNBC's Chris Jansing met up with five Democrats in Racine, Wisconsin.
Jansing first asked the group who felt the Democratic Party establishment was doing a good job. One woman tenatively raised her hand.
When Jansing asked who thought the Democrats could "blow a real opportunity" in the 2018 elections, all five raised their hands.
"I think that there's a lack of understanding of what the message is if there is one," said Lori Hawkins, an organizer with Indivisible.
One of the panelists said condemnation of Trump voters doesn't help, as those individuals are also family and friends.
"It's easy to get caught up in the anger and say like ‘Trump voters are this and Trump voters are that,’ but that's my family too," said Gina Walkinton, the founder of Forward Kenosha. "Those are my people that I grew up with."
"Democrats are good on social issues," Democratic voter Andre Walton said. "But what are they doing economically to help people?"
He added that Trump spoke to a lot of Americans by his talk of bringing back jobs, but Democrats didn't focus on jobs during the 2016 campaign.
"Trump was saying, 'I'm going to fix this, I'm going to bring back jobs.' No Democrat was saying that," Walton said.
