Continetti Blasts 'Intellectually Dishonest' Green New Deal for Spurning Nuclear

Washington Free Beacon editor in chief Matthew Continetti said Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's (D., N.Y.) signature Green New Deal proposal is neither green nor true to the original New Deal.

During the Friday episode Fox News' "Special Report," Continetti pointed out how backward the proposal is from a scientific standpoint.

"One, I think it's intellectually dishonest because you have these grand plans, but you forswear nuclear power," Continetti said. "There's no way we can even begin to make a huge dent in our carbon emissions without embracing nuclear."

Continetti went on to say that Ocasio-Cortez's provision that guaranteed economic security to people who did not want to work goes contrary to the spirit of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal.

"That would overturn the entirety of the American welfare state, beginning with the New Deal. We have always provided for people who are incapable of working," he said. "She wants to say, 'no, it doesn't matter if you're capable or not. If you don't want to work, we'll take care of you anyway.' This is a radical plan."

Continetti's comments came during a panel discussion on what the proposal meant for the future of the Democratic Party.

Ocasio-Cortez debuted the Green New Deal Thursday, to much fanfare from 2020 Democratic hopefuls. Sens. Kamala Harris (Calif.), Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), and Cory Booker (N.J.) all voiced their support. Booker co-sponsored the plan in the Senate.

The plan contains reams of progressive goals, including health care for all, plans to improve or replace all buildings in America with energy efficient upgrades, and a goal to promote train travel over air travel.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) seemed to downplay the plan on Thursday as a "green dream."
