Comey Tweets Quote About 'Justice,' 'Democracy' Following Mueller Indictments

Former FBI Director James Comey appeared to hint on Twitter what his feelings are about the indictment of a former Trump campaign official and the guilty plea of another, both of which were revealed on Monday.

President Donald Trump fired Comey in May, and the ousted FBI chief subsequently testified that Trump asked him to "let go" of the investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn and for assurances that he was not under FBI investigation.

Following Comey's dismissal, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed special prosecutor Robert Mueller to head the Russia investigation. On Monday, Mueller's office unsealed indictments of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his longtime business partner Rick Gates, and revealed that former Trump adviser George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to making false statements in the Russia probe months earlier.

Following Monday's revelations, Comey shared a quote from American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr on his private Twitter account.

"Man's capacity for justice makes democracy possible, but man's inclination to injustice makes democracy necessary," he wrote.

Comey and his friend and Lawfare editor in chief Benjamin Wittes confirmed last week that the Reinhold Niebuhr Twitter account does belong to the former FBI director.
