Biden Tells the World 'America Is Coming Back Like We Used to Be'

Former Vice President Joe Biden said he had a message for the rest of the world with his newly announced presidential campaign: America is "coming back like we used to be."

Biden spoke to reporters in Wilmington, Delaware, after he released a video officially launching his third bid for the White House. He framed his 2020 candidacy as a battle for America's "soul" against President Donald Trump, saying "we have to remember who we are."

"Do you have a message for the rest of the world?" a reporter asked.

"Yes," Biden said. "America is coming back like we used to be. Ethical, straight, telling the truth ... supporting our allies. All those good things."

Biden joined a crowded field of Democratic candidates, but he has generally led in national polls and in early primary states thanks to his name recognition and popularity in the party. While his campaign will tout his decades of experience as a senator and then vice president, he also has a long history of positions and quotes to defend in an increasingly left-leaning party.

Biden has taken criticism for his handling of Anita Hill's accusations of sexual harassment against Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas, his past stances on criminal justice, and his touchy-feely nature with women, several of whom have recently publicly voiced discomfort over their interactions.

His decision to enter the race comes after months of public mulling over whether he was the right person to face Trump. His last two presidential bids in 1988 and 2008 quickly flamed out. He joined Barack Obama's ticket in 2008 and the two forged a close friendship in office.
