Axelrod Rips Clinton for Election Excuses: 'It Takes a Lot of Work to Lose to Donald Trump'

Former Obama White House adviser David Axelrod ripped Hillary Clinton on Wednesday for her continued excuses for losing the 2016 presidential election.

Axelrod was asked to comment on Clinton's remarks from Tuesday, when she said that FBI Director James Comey's letter to Congress played a role in her loss to President Donald Trump, as well as WikiLeaks, sexism, and Russia.

Axelrod first said that he believed Comey's letter may have played a role in the loss before turning to her campaign's errors.

"Jim Comey didn't tell her not to campaign in Wisconsin after the convention. Jim Comey didn't say, 'Don't put any resources into Michigan until the final week of the campaign,'" Axelrod said. "One of the things that hindered her in the campaign was a sense that she never fully was willing to take responsibility for her mistakes, particularly that server."

Axelrod also recommended that Clinton stop appearing to shift responsibility for her loss.

"She said the words 'I'm responsible,' but everything else suggested that she really doesn't feel that way and I don't think that helps her in the long run," Axelrod said.

Additionally, Axelrod took Clinton to task for losing to Trump, who he felt would have been easy to beat. Trump's popularity numbers were historically low for a major party candidate during the campaign, and he is already the least popular president at this stage of his term in modern history.

"It takes a lot of work to lose to Donald Trump, let me tell you," he said. "He was the least popular presidential candidate to win in the history of polling, and so it wasn't just the Comey letter. The fact that she was in a position to lose because of the Comey letter is something that deserves some introspection."
