Ex-Detroit Dem Mayor Denied Bond

A federal judge denied Detroit's former Democratic Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick’s request to leave prison while he awaits sentencing to receive treatment for a "serious knee injury," according to CBS Detroit.

Kilpatrick’s attorney, James Thomas, stated in court documents that his client’s request for medical treatment over the past weeks at Milan Detention Center "have not yet been met in any meaningful way."

Thomas has argued that Kilpatrick isn’t a flight risk because he’s broke, and that he is not a danger to the public.

Kilpatrick’s mother, former U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, had offered her Detroit home as collateral to ensure her son shows up to court for sentencing.

The judge made the decision Wednesday, citing Kilpatrick’s "history of problems adhering to parole conditions."

Kilpatrick was convicted earlier this month of 24 charges including racketeering, extortion, attempted extortion, bribery, mail fraud, wire fraud, and filing false tax returns.
