Car Rams Security Gate at UK Military Base, U.S. Forces Fire Shots

A man drove a car through a security checkpoint at a Royal Air Force base in the United Kingdom on Monday, prompting American security forces to fire shots at the car.

The British man was arrested by security forces as he attempted to gain access to the base, RAF Mildenhall, which is home to the U.S. Air Force's 100th Air Refueling Wing.

The local police department helped keep people away from the scene shortly after the incident and now have the driver in custody, the BBC reports.

The base was temporarily on lockdown but quickly resumed normal operations.

Authorities believe the incident was not terrorism-related.

RAF Mildenhall's security is provided by both the UK Ministry of Defense and the U.S. Military. The base is used by U.S. forces as a transport hub and is home to a fleet of refueling aircraft and special operations forces.

The base has been earmarked to close, with much of the American contingent there relocating to Germany, but those plans have been delayed until 2024.

A man was sentenced to life in prison back in May 2016 for using his job as a delivery driver to gain information about the base for a potential terrorist attack.
