Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) repeated her stance that she is against any border wall when asked Thursday about a possible compromise to resolve the government shutdown.
MSNBC correspondent Garrett Haake asked Pelosi during her weekly press conference about her saying she would give a single dollar for the wall.
"Republicans have talked quite a bit about the comments that you made where you said you'd spend one dollar for the wall. Open up the government first and then negotiate—" Haake said before being interrupted by Pelosi.
"That's a silly question, with all due respect. That's a silly comment on the part of Republicans. They're desperate. They know we have to open up government," Pelosi said. "Let's not glorify a silly question on their part."
"But do you need to express more willingness to negotiate on that figure for Republicans to get past this idea—" Haake attempted to ask before Pelosi again interrupted.
"I'm not for a wall," Pelosi said. She repeated herself several more times, the last time at a near whisper.
President Donald Trump and Congress remain at an impasse over funding for Trump's proposed wall along the southern border. The standoff has resulted in a partial government shutdown that is now in its 27th day. Over 800,000 furloughed federal government workers have gone without a paycheck, with some of them still having to work. Trump is adamant Congress approve wall funding while Democratic leaders like Pelosi remain adamant no funding will go towards a border wall. Pelosi has gone as far as saying a border wall is "immoral."
Some Democrats have distanced themselves from Pelosi's view by saying some physical barriers are necessary along the border.
