CNN: Clinton Angering Both Sides of the Aisle With Keystone Silence

July 29, 2015

CNN's New Day reported Wednesday on the "heat" Hillary Clinton is facing from both liberals and interested voters on the Right for her continued refusal to say whether she would support the Keystone XL Pipeline.

Clinton again declined to give her stance on the issue Tuesday in New Hampshire, when a Tea Party Republican voter asked her to give a "yes or no" answer on the subject.

"This is President Obama’s decision, and I am not going to second-guess him because I was in a position to set this in motion, and I do not think that would be the right thing to do," she said. "So I want to wait and see what he and Secretary Kerry decide. If it is undecided when I become president, I will answer your question."

The voter, Bruce Blodgett, told CNN's Jeff Zeleny "it was a very weak answer."

"I just want to know where she stands on it, one way or the other," he said. "Part of running for president is you've got to give an answer."

Zeleny reported Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.), who is running to the left of Clinton, also hit her for not taking a stance.

"It is hard for me to understand how one can be concerned about climate change but not vigorously oppose the Keystone Pipeline," Sanders said.

Other environmentalists against the pipeline are criticizing Clinton for not stating her view.

"The risk here for Clinton, of course, is that she could look like she's being less than forthcoming as a candidate," Zeleny said.

President Obama is strongly opposed to Keystone, vetoing a measure that would green-light its construction in February. Left-wing activists claim the pipeline, which would transport oil from Canadian tar sands to U.S. oil refineries, will hurt the environment and contribute to climate change, but Obama's own State Department acknowledged it would have minimal environmental impact.
