Biden Spokeswoman Won't Say She Accepts Iowa Results

February 5, 2020

Joe Biden campaign spokeswoman Symone Sanders repeatedly refused to say Wednesday whether she accepted as legitimate the Iowa caucus results reported so far.

CNN anchor Brianna Keilar asked over and over if Sanders had concerns about the legitimacy of the numbers, given the well-documented problems with the reporting of Monday's Iowa caucus results. The partial results show Biden in fourth place.

When Sanders didn't answer directly, Keilar accused her of dodging.

"We do not have all the data," Sanders said. "But we are moving forward."

"But the data that you have, are you putting that into doubt?" Keilar asked. "Symone, this is important."

As Sanders laid out the issues that plagued Iowa Democrats, Keilar continued to talk over her and ask if she believed the results, which show Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) in a tight race for first.

"Is this data correct, in your view? Is it correct?" Keilar asked.

"Look, Brianna, I have not analyzed the back end of the data," Sanders said. "Don't try to paint this as we're trying to say this is some kind of conspiracy theory."

Keilar told Sanders the numbers, which thus far represent 71 percent of the precincts in the state, were trustworthy according to Iowa Democrats.

"I guess we'll have to take the Iowa Democratic Party at their word, Brianna," Sanders said.

Fellow Biden spokeswoman Kate Bedingfield said Tuesday it was a "real concern" that voters couldn't be confident in the results.
