Poll: Democratic Party's Approval Rating Plummets Among Independents

Down 13 points since January

October 5, 2021

The Democratic Party's favorability rating among independents has plummeted 13 points since January, according to a recent Gallup poll.

The drop in approval rating—from 48 to 35 percent—has depressed the party's overall favorable rating from 48 to 43 percent over the same time period. While independents typically rate the Democratic Party more favorably than the Republican Party, both parties now have the same rating among independents, according to the poll.

The party's decline in approval matches that of President Joe Biden, who has seen his approval rating drop 24 points among independents since January, according to a Gallup poll released last month. Biden's overall favorability rating, 43 percent, is the lowest of his presidency.

Independents' shift from the Democratic Party comes as the Biden administration confronts a series of crises, including record illegal immigration at the southern border and elevated inflation. Biden's approval rating also dropped amid his administration's botched withdrawal from Afghanistan, during which a terrorist attack killed 13 U.S. service members.

"Biden's recent struggles have likely not helped the Democratic Party's image," according to Gallup.
