Pelosi Blasts CNN Reporter for Asking When She'll Leave Speakership

November 3, 2020

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) criticized a CNN reporter on Election Day when he asked about her promise to resign the speakership in 2022.

"With all due respect to you and the organization you represent, that's the least important question you could ask today," Pelosi told CNN's Manu Raju Tuesday. "One of these days I'll let you know what my plans are—when it is appropriate and it matters. It doesn't matter right now."

While Democrats and the media have united in condemning President Donald Trump's criticism of the media, Pelosi has a long history of attacking journalists in response to questions she dislikes. In an extended diatribe last month, she called CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer an "apologist" for Republicans because he asked her about the status of a coronavirus relief bill.

Pelosi struck a bargain in 2018 with the Democratic Caucus to limit her speakership to four years, meaning she would pass on the gavel following the 2022 election cycle, at the latest. She is the oldest speaker in congressional history, having turned 80 in March.
