The dating app Tinder now offers its users the choice of 37 different genders, as its founder claims that gender is a "complex conversation."
The lengthy list includes "Pangender," which "can (or not)" be infinite.
"We want to make sure everyone has the ability to meet someone new that can have a profound impact on their lives," said Tinder CEO Sean Rad.
BuzzFeed News Deputy LGBT Editor Sarah Karlan appeared in a video praising Tinder's update as "super important."
"It's super important for dating apps and dating websites to be trans-inclusive because there are trans people who want to date and use these apps and I think that people are finally catching on," Karlan said. "It's important not only for people so that they can tailor their profile exactly how they want but also for their own personal safety."
Karlan was pleased that people are "finally" seeing that gender is "not so black and white."
"A lot of trans people don't identify as either male or female in that two-box binary," she said. "There are genderqueer people, there are people all across the spectrum so it's important to have the options to either enter what you identify as or pick from a big list. It's not so black and white and people are finally starting to catch up to that."
Tinder worked with the LGBT group GLAAD to come up with the list. Rad said the company will keep updating the app because "gender is a complex conversation—it’s an ongoing dialogue."
The list includes "Agender," "Gender Fluid," "Gender Nonconforming," every variation of "Trans" and "Transgender," and "Two-Spirit."
Another option is "Pangender," a gender that can transcend sex and time.
"Pangender (and/or Omnigender) is a non-binary gender experience which refers to a wide multiplicity of genders that can (or not) tend to the infinite (meaning that this experience can go beyond the current knowledge of genders)," according to Nonbinary.org. "This experience can be either simultaneously or over time."
Tinder users can also select "Neutrois," which is not a gender at all. The term is defined as a "non-binary gender identity which is considered to be a neutral or null gender."
