Warren Attempts to 'Clarify' Statement About Dem Primaries Being Rigged: 'We Should Never Have a Thumb on the Scale'

November 21, 2017

Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.) said on Monday she wanted to "clarify" her previous statement that the 2016 Democratic primaries were rigged.

CBS’s Stephen Colbert of "The Late Show" asked Warren if she wanted to amend her statement made in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper earlier in the month. During the interview, she agreed with former Democratic National Committee interim chair Donna Brazile that the primaries were rigged in Hillary Clinton's favor.

Rather than saying she wanted to amend her previous statement, Warren said she wanted to "clarify" that the DNC has its issues.

"Jake Tapper asked you if you thought that the primaries had been rigged, and you said, ‘yes,’" Colbert said to the Massachusetts senator. "Would you like to amend that statement?"

"Well, let’s clarify," Warren said. "We have a problem at the DNC, I agree with Donna Brazile on that, and we have a new head of the DNC, who has said, ‘Yeah, there’s some things that are wrong, we should never have our thumb on the scales at the DNC.’ And now he is committed to putting new rules in place … to make sure that the Democratic Party is the party of the people so we can fight forward."

Warren then deflected, shifting to discuss multiple recent Democratic Party wins in local and state elections.

"That is exactly what we were doing a week ago Tuesday when Democrats won all across this country," Warren concluded before moving on to discuss the 2018 midterm elections.
