Lena Dunham Flusters Maria Shriver With Bizarre Comment During 'Today' Interview

February 10, 2017

Journalist Maria Shriver was really thrown off her game during an interview Friday on the "Today" show with actress Lena Dunham, who was promoting the sixth and final season of her HBO show "Girls."

The two were having a friendly conversation about the show until Shriver, who was guest hosting "Today," told Dunham that she had seen the first three episodes of the final season. Dunham's quick reply was not what Shriver was expecting.

"You saw a penis, right?" Dunham asked.

Shriver, turning red and unnerved, said that she "saw more than that."

"You caught me there. I'm not sure you're allowed to say that on television–but you did," Shriver said.

Dunham threw her hands up and joked that she would not be allowed to come back to "Today."

"Going out with a bang," she said.

"Going out with a bang," Shriver repeated. "We're just going out."

The camera then showed co-host Matt Lauer off to the side.

"What?" he exclaimed, shaking his head.

Shriver tried to get the interview back in focus but ended up begging Lauer for help.

"Matt, help! She threw me off," Shriver said.

Dunham then apologized but joked that Shriver must had said the word "penis" on air before.

"That's OK, that's OK, that's the difference between generations," Shriver said. "I wasn’t brought up talking like that."

Dunham seemed unsure what to do next and started to get up from her chair.

"Wait a minute, you're still on the air," Shriver quickly said. "Sit down."

"I am?" Dunham asked.

"Yes, you are. You're still on the air. Sit down," Shriver responded. "Matt, are you supposed to be saying something?"

Lauer left her out to dry, though.

"No. We aren't still on the air, but you are. No, I'm kidding," Lauer said.

Shriver proceeded to laugh nervously for a few seconds, seeming unsure of what to do next.

"I'm thrilled by what's just happened here," Dunham said.

Lauer then approached the two women to end the segment.

"You're both so attractive," Dunham said as the segment ended.

Dunham was also an avid Hillary Clinton supporter and admitted that President Trump's election caused her to cry and lose weight.
