Former Washington Free Beacon journalist Matthew Foldi filed to run for Congress on Friday morning in western Maryland, the Free Beacon has learned.

Foldi filed to enter the Republican primary for Maryland's Sixth Congressional District, which is held by two-term Democratic incumbent David Trone, a multi-millionaire who co-founded Total Wine. Foldi, who is best known for his brutal takedowns of Biden energy secretary Jennifer Granholm—as well as his flamboyant outfits and revolting meatless diet—will now look to accost the enemies of freedom from the hallowed halls of Congress, as opposed to his obscenely messy Free Beacon desk.

Free Beacon editor in chief Eliana Johnson said Foldi will be "missed" in the office.

"His unrefrigerated bottle of sriracha will be missed," Johnson said. "Foldi may not be able to clean his desk, but we trust he would do a better job cleaning up Congress."

The nascent campaign already has allies on Capitol Hill. A well-positioned U.S. senator said Foldi's congressional bid "would be epic."

Despite Foldi's youth, this is not the Republican's first run for office. In 2016, he became the youngest elected official in Chicago history when he won a race to serve as the city's Fifth Ward Republican committeeman. Foldi went on to serve as an assistant to online personality and Ruthless Podcast cohost Comfortably Smug, who quickly endorsed his top minion's campaign.

"Foldi is one of the hardest working, motivated, and capable people I've ever met," Smug said in a rare display of earnestness.

Before facing Trone in November, Foldi has to win a Republican primary that includes state lawmaker and former congressional candidate Neil Parrott, who lost to Trone by 19 points in 2020. Sources anticipate others, including Republican and Afghanistan veteran Mariela Roca, may yet enter the race.

Republicans have reason to be optimistic about their chances to win the district. According to a McLaughlin and Associates poll taken last week, 45 percent of the district's voters said they'd rather be represented by a Republican, while 44 percent said they'd prefer a Democrat.

Foldi resigned from the Free Beacon on Friday morning.
